TEDxReno 2024
When we were presented with the theme for TEDxReno 2024 and tasked with developing its visual identity, our team dove deep into the concept of disruption—what it means, how it manifests, and why it’s essential to the evolution of ideas.
Disruption is a loaded word. It’s chaotic, transformative, and often uncomfortable. But it also signals progress. As we explored this theme, it became clear that one of the most immediate and relevant examples of disruption in today’s world is artificial intelligence. From art and media to business and education, AI has emerged as a force that is reshaping nearly every facet of life. It’s impossible to ignore—and that made it the perfect symbol.
Rather than approaching this design challenge traditionally, we leaned into the spirit of disruption. We used Adobe Firefly, an AI-powered image generator, to create the centerpiece of our visual direction: the iconic TEDx “X”. This wasn’t just a stylistic choice—it was a statement. By using AI to generate the initial artwork and then refining it through our creative tools and vision, we were actively engaging with the disruption instead of resisting it. We weren’t just talking about change—we were designing with it.
This approach allowed us to frame disruption not as a threat, but as a catalyst. AI wasn’t the enemy of creativity; it was a partner. It became a visual metaphor for adaptability, innovation, and the forward momentum of ideas.
Beyond the main AI-generated “X”, our visual theme also included abstract representations of red plastic in the process of exploding—another nod to breaking norms and shattering the status quo. While bold and dynamic, these elements were balanced with the clean, minimalistic aesthetic TED is known for, keeping the focus clear and purposeful.
Ultimately, the visual identity of TEDxReno 2024 is more than a look—it’s a conversation. It reflects our willingness to embrace the unknown and turn disruption into design. Because sometimes, the best way to illustrate a big idea is to live it.
